Friendly faces

Returning to the South brought back wonderful memories. Where I live, strangers say a neighborly hi to each other, and they wave to each other while driving down back country roads. Once in a while someone here may surprise you by pulling in front of you in traffic, but they will still take time to wave a friendly thanks. If you step out of a store here in a heavy rain without an umbrella, chances are good someone will offer to walk you to your car with theirs.

The diverse backgrounds of those living here add unmistakable interest to the culture. While people have moved here from all over the world, bringing treasured traditions and habits, we still have much in common. We love seeing the blooming of the beautiful magnolias, dogwoods, and azaleas. Saying "y'all" is a habit that almost everyone unavoidably falls into before long. The slower pace of living here may unsettle some a little at first, but most adapt easily. Because we don't rush around at breakneck speed, we can't help but savor the delights of flowering trees and bushes. Hawks soaring majestically overhead claim our attention for a time, and our umbrellas stay damp a little longer because we looked to see who else might need to stay dry.
